Vaginal odor isn't something most people feel comfortable talking about, but it's a common occurrence according to Dr. Kathy Greaves, a professor at Ohio State University in the department of human development and family sciences. In a column for the college's newspaper "The Daily Barometer," Greaves says most women have natural vaginal odor, ranging from mild to pungent. If you're sensitive about vaginal odors, there are some things you can do to minimize them.
Step 1
Shower or bathe regularly with mild soap, thoroughly cleaning the outside parts of your genitals. If you notice your vaginal odor increasing throughout the day--a common situation--take one shower in the morning and a second shower in the afternoon.
Step 2
Wear all-cotton underwear, especially if you're going to be physically active. Natural fabrics help prevent odors.
Step 3
Sleep without underwear or pajama bottoms so that your genitals have a chance to breathe. Odor-causing bacteria thrive in moist environments so giving your genitals the opportunity to dry out helps prevent bacterial growth.
Step 4
Sprinkle a little cornstarch into your underwear to help absorb moisture and the subsequent odor. Your genital area is especially prone to sweating, which can cause odor.
Step 5
Avoid consuming large amounts of caffeine, sugar or alcohol, all of which contribute to vaginal odor, Greaves writes.
Step 6
Wash the outside of your genital area with a combination of baking soda and water occasionally or once a week to help eliminate odors, recommends Elizabeth R. Barker, associate professor and director of the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the College of Nursing at Ohio State University.
