The Hoop It Up tournament is played in several cities across the United States. In this tournament, teams of three to five players compete in three-on-three basketball games. Teams that win games get to play again later in the tournament. If a team continues to win, it will play for that city's championship. In the early rounds of the tournament, teams referee their own games and fouls are called on the honors system. In the later rounds, referees call the fouls and violations.

Length of Game

The first team to reach 20 points wins. In the event that neither team has reached 20 points within 30 minutes from the start of the game, the team with the lead gets the win. If the two teams are tied after 30 minutes, the first team to score two points wins the game. All shots made from inside the three-point arc are worth one point; all shots taken from beyond the arc are worth two points. If a player is fouled while shooting and he does not make the shot, he gets a free throw. If he makes the shot while he is fouled, the other team gets possession despite committing the foul.

Taking it Back

This tournament is a half-court competition. If the team with the ball shoots and misses, the team that rebounds the ball must take it back beyond the arc in order to start their offensive possession. Any time a team gets possession of the ball, it must take it back past the arc in order to start its offensive possession.

Player Substitution

Each team must submit its official roster before the start of the tournament. Teams may put substitute players into the game during any stoppage in play. All substitute players must be named on the roster. Teams who use players who are not on their roster will be disqualified. Players must carry identification with them, and must display it to the referees or tournament officials when it is requested.
