Menstrual cramps refer to the pain and discomfort that a woman experiences in her abdominal area before or during her period. The cramps are caused by the release of a group of chemicals known as prostaglandins. These chemicals cause the uterus to contract and result in the cramping sensation. Although you can take over-the-counter pain relievers, home remedies may work as quickly and as effectively.

Hot Soaks

Heat can be used to ease the discomfort caused by menstrual cramps and can work instantly. According to the Mayo Clinic, soaking in hot water or placing a heating pad on your abdomen can be just as effective as taking a pain reliever. If you take a bath, relax the muscles by adding a cup of sea salt and a cup of baking soda before soaking. Expose the area to heat for 10- to 20-minute intervals throughout the day to stop cramps.

Vitamins and Minerals

A multivitamin can be used to get rid of cramps at home. The supplement should contain calcium and magnesium, according to "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies," featured on the Mother Nature website. Calcium eases the cramping, while the magnesium helps your body better absorb calcium. Take the supplement with food throughout your period.

Exercise

Increasing physical activity can help relieve cramping quickly without the need to take any medications. Participate in cardio activities such as walking, jogging, cycling and swimming for at least half an hour. Even if you feel some discomfort because of the cramping, once you get moving you should find relief.

Acupressure

"The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies" also discusses the use of acupressure to alleviate menstrual cramping. On the heel, you will find three depressions that have a heightened sensitivity while you are menstruating. Use your thumb and fingers to massage the area. Move your fingers to the rear of the foot up to your calf muscle. Continue the massage for several minutes to get quick relief.
