Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy are responsible for many changes in your skin. Sebum production may increase, causing acne or other blemishes. Pregnancy limits treatment options due to possible transference to your unborn baby. There are completely safe alternatives to treating pregnancy acne and blemishes, however, without posing a risk to your health or your child's.
Step 1
Wash your face two to three times daily with a gentle facial cleanser. This decreases skin's oiliness and helps remove sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria from the pores. Ensure that your chosen cleanser is oil free and that you do not wash your face more than three times daily. This will prevent overdrying of the skin, which actually makes blemishes worse.
Step 2
Drink eight to ten glasses of water per day. This cleanses the skin from the inside, unclogging pores and keeping oil production under control. Drinking plenty of water also removes toxins in the skin that may contribute to blemishes.
Step 3
Avoid popping pimples or picking at blemishes. This prevents them from healing properly and could lead to scarring of the skin at the blemish site. Touching blemishes may also spread oil and bacteria to other parts of the face or body causing them to form in other areas.
Step 4
Take erythromycin as prescribed by your doctor. Erythromycin is an antibiotic that when taken orally or used as a topical cream, treats moderate to severe acne clearing hard to heal blemishes. Retinoid topical creams are not a safe alternative during pregnancy due to risk of fetal harm.
