The range of motion (ROM) of the foot is a measure of the foot's ability to travel along a particular axis of movement. The ROM is typically measured in degrees and will measure the flexion of the foot. This includes the movement of the toes towards the lower leg and the movement of the toes away from the lower leg.
Step 1
Place the hole in the center of the goniometer over your ankle. Align the fixed arm of the goniometer along your lower leg so that it points towards your knee. Align the free end of the goniometer so that it points towards the ball of your foot.
Step 2
Place your foot in the neutral position. Move your foot so that it forms a right angle with your lower leg. The goniometer should show an angular measure of 90 degrees.
Step 3
Measure the ROM for the dorsal flexion of your foot. Pull your foot towards your lower leg as far as you can while keeping the free end of the goniometer pointed towards the ball of your foot. Subtract the goniometer's reading from 90 degrees. The standard ROM dorsal flexion of your foot is about 20 degrees.
Step 4
Measure the ROM for the plantar flexion of your foot. Push your foot away from your lower leg as far as it will go and record the goniometer's reading. Subtract 90 degrees from this reading. The standard ROM for the planter flexion of your foot is about 50 degrees.
