Men and women of all ages can experience low libido. Stress, fatigue, illness, emotional disruptions and hormone imbalances can all contribute to sexual problems. Most nutritional supplements and medicinal herbs have been the subject of only limited study; scientific inquiry has not yet proven the efficacy of all libido-enhancing medicinal herbs. However, a few products appear to enhance sexual vitality in both men and women. Consult a qualified practitioner before taking any supplement if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or comping with a medical condition.
L-Arginine
According to the National Institutes of Health, the amino acid L-arginine acts as a vasodilator; it increases the size of blood vessels and enhances blood flow throughout the body. Because it can increase blood flow to the genitals, L-arginine may be a viable treatment for men and women with low libido and other sexual problems.
Horny Goat Weed
A component of traditional Chinese medicine, horny goat weed also acts as a vasodilator and may improve genital blood flow. While most herbalists recommend horny goat weed as a treatment for male impotence, it is traditionally considered to be equally effective for women. Unfortunately, no large-scale human trials have determined horny goat weed's overall safety or efficacy.
Ginseng
Another Chinese herb, ginseng root enables the body to adapt to stress with fewer fluctuations in immune function or mood. According to the National Institutes of Health, early studies suggest that ginseng can treat erectile dysfunction, male infertility and sexual problems associated with menopause. Other adaptogen herbs such as eleuthero and rhodiola can also be useful for improving sexual interest and vitality.
Maca Root
According to renowned herbalist Chris Kilham, maca root can improve libido in men and women alike. Maca has also been investigated as a treatment for hormone imbalances and infertility. A study published in Andrologia found that men taking maca root experience increased sexual interest and better sperm quality than men taking placebo.
Yohimbe
According to the National Institutes of Health, "strong scientific evidence" supports the use of yohimbe extract as a treatment for erectile dysfunction; in fact, an extract of yohimbe is commonly sold as a prescription drug. Yohimbe improves genital bloodflow and sensitivity in both men and women. However, it is also associated with many significant side effects, including anxiety, irritability and heart palpitations.
