If you are going on a road trip, you will likely take a map; the same should be true if you wish to accomplish something. A goal can act as your map and helps you to determine the steps you should take for achievement. While setting your goals is important, your commitment and focus on achieving them are just as important.
Start a Free-Flow of Ideas
In life, you often have many things you wish to accomplish. Start by writing--or typing--all these things down, for at least 15 minutes. Whether large or small, simply write down all the goals you have.
Assign Each Goal a Priority Level
Prioritizing your goals gives you a good idea of what you need to accomplish in the immediate future, five years down the road and during your lifetime. If you are having a tough time prioritizing each, ask a friend or family member about her perceptions in regard to what would be important to accomplish sooner, rather than later. This also allows you to share your goals with others, which encourages accountability and increases the likelihood that you will achieve your goals.
Create a Plan
A goal is difficult to achieve without a clear plan as to how you will accomplish it. Because you have set a timeline with your priorities, work from the beginning, and establish how you will measure if you have accomplished your goal. For example, if you aspire to write a book, set a number of pages you would like to complete each week or month and a desired finish date. By setting periodic goals, this helps you evaluate your progress.
Reward Yourself
Encouragement is vital to continuing on a path to achievement. If you do not feel rewarded for the steps you have taken, you may become discouraged and fail to achieve your goals. Use the milestones you have marked for your goals to offer yourself encouragement or a reward in whatever form you find most relaxing. Whether or not you share your accomplishments with others who will share in your enthusiasm for a project, make sure to pat yourself on the back for the efforts you are making to achieve your goals and accomplish your dreams.
