If you have recently purchased a fishing reel that needs line or you want to replace old and worn out line on a reel with new line, it's important to tie that line on properly. A good knot allows you to wind the new line from the line spool to the reel spool and helps prevents the possibility of your line being stripped completely off your reel by a fish. Correct position of the line spool while loading your reel is also important to prevent a line twist that could cause the line to tangle when cast.
Step 1
Thread the line from the line spool through the guides on the fishing rod, starting at the tip then through the reel line guide or under the reel bail arm and loop it around the reel spool.
Step 2
Wind the end of the line completely around the main portion of the line to make a loop. Repeat this step two more times to create three loops.
Step 3
Pass the end of the line through the loops, beginning with the first loop. Pull the knot tight around the reel spool. Cut any excess line from the knot.
Step 4
For spinning reels, place the line spool on the floor so that the line is coming off the line spool in the same direction it is being wound onto the spool. Begin winding the fishing reel. For bait casters, have someone hold a pencil and place the line spool on it. Wind the line onto the reel spool so that the line spool turns on the pencil to prevent the line from twisting.
Step 5
Fill the spinning reel spool to within 1/8 of the capacity of the reel. Fill the bait casting reel to within 1/4 of its capacity.
