Relax by Exercising

Program Description
Relax by raising your heart rate? While exercising to relax seems contradictory, exercise can help you relax by generating endorphins. Endorphins, chemicals released by your pituitary gland, can relax you. These chemicals are associated with the feeling of euphoria. Among other benefits, the secretion of endorphins leads to an enhanced immune response, an improved mood, and less pain. Exercise, including running, swimming, bicycling, aerobics and recreational athletics, are known stress-relievers. Start exercising to release endorphins and relieve stress.

Actions
1. Begin by exercising at least 3 times/week for 20-30 minutes.

2. Start each exercise session with a gentle 5-minute warm-up of walking or light jogging and stretching.

3. End each exercise session with a 5-10 minute cool down to allow your heart rate to decrease gradually.

4. Increase exercise session duration to 4-6 times/week for 30-60 minutes as you feel more comfortable.

5. To stick with your exercise program, choose a time of day to that works best for you.

6. Schedule exercise sessions into your week instead of trying to “fit it in.”

7. Find a workout partner, experts report you will likely be a more consistent exerciser when you exercise with a friend.
