You can make your hair shiny and lustrous with a few ingredients from your refrigerator as long as you can handle the rather strong smell on your hair while they do their work. Homemade hair remedies can work well, but it's important to rinse them completely using a mild shampoo if you need to. For best results, use a combination treatment that mixes everyday conditioning with a once-a-week intensive hair mask.

Step 1

Massage 1/2 cup mayonnaise through clean, damp hair with your hands.

Step 2

Cover your hair with a shower cap or wrap it in a towel, and let the mayonnaise sit on your hair for 15 minutes.

Step 3

Rinse your hair completely with lukewarm water, using your hands to work the mayonnaise through your hair until it is completely rinsed. Shampoo as usual, and finish with a quick rinse of cool water.

Step 4

Break the egg yolk with a fork, and mash it with the avocado to form a thick paste.

Step 5

Apply the mask to your hair, using your fingers to work it completely into your hair. Let the mixture sit on your hair for 15 minutes. Make this mixture once a week for a weekly conditioning treatment.

Step 6

Rinse the avocado-egg yolk mixture completely from your hair using lukewarm water. Shampoo as usual, then finish with a rinse of cool water.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you like, mix the avocado and egg yolks with the mayonnaise for extra conditioning power. Since mayonnaise is made with egg yolks and olive oil, you can skip the mayonnaise and add a little olive oil to the avocado-egg mixture to get a similar effect. Make a batch of the avocado-egg mixture fresh every time you want to use it. You can store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, but it's best to use it as soon as you make it.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • Avocado, skin removed
  • 1 egg yolk
