Cephalexin (keflex) is an antibiotic used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, middle ear, bones, skin and the reproductive and urinary systems, PDR Health says. It's in a category of drugs called Cephalosporins. Your toddler shouldn't take Cephalexin if he has experienced an allergic reaction to other cephalosporin medications. There are certain side effects you should be aware of.
Diarrhea and Diaper Rash
Your toddler may experience diarrhea while taking Cephalexin. This side effect may diminish after a few days as her body adjusts to this medication. Dehydration may occur if your child is experiencing diarrhea. Be sure to give her ample fluids throughout the day and contact her pediatrician if diarrhea continues or worsens. Diarrhea in a toddler can lead to diaper rash. Using an over-the-counter cream such as A&D ointment or Balmex protects the skin and helps prevent diaper rash.
Dizziness and Fatigue
Your toddler may show signs of dizziness and increased fatigue while taking Cephalexin. He may seem a bit more sleepy than usual and require additional rest. Allow him to nap when necessary and keep him from over-exerting himself during play if experiencing dizziness.
Rash
Development of a mild rash may occur while your toddler is taking Cephalexin. If a rash occurs, contact your pediatrician for additional instruction.
Allergic Reaction
In rare cases, a toddler may experience an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. According to Drug Information Online, symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives; difficulty breathing; and swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. If your toddler experiences symptoms of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
