Darkness under the eyes can occur as a result of aging, fatigue, allergies or a large consumption of caffeine, salt or alcohol. Although darkness under the eyes is typically only a cosmetic issue, it can be an unsightly and embarrassing problem often accompanied by puffiness.

Step 1

Get enough sleep every night. Fatigue can make you look pale and cause your eyes to look hollow, increasing the darkness under the eyes. According to the Mayo Clinic, seven hours of sleep each night is beneficial.

Step 2

Identify any allergies you may have by seeing a doctor. Allergies to food, dust, pollen or other items can cause swelling and darkness under your eyes. Avoid these allergy triggers whenever possible.

Step 3

Use an under-eye cream designed to reduce darkness under the eyes. Look for creams that contain retinol and vitamins K, C and E.

Step 4

Reduce your intake of salt, caffeine and alcohol. These can dehydrate and thin the skin, causing darkness under the eyes to appear.

Step 5

Use a cold compress on your eyes. You can use a cool wet cloth, wet tea bags or cucumber slices.

Step 6

Apply a concealer to the area under your eyes. This will make the skin appear lighter.

Step 7

Talk to your doctor about the darkness under your eyes if it concerns you. He may be able to prescribe a strong cream or discuss laser surgery with you.

Things You'll Need

  • Under-eye cream
  • Cold compress
