Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious, infectious disease that primarily effects the lungs. TB is spread from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air, states the Mayo Clinic. If diagnosed with TB, you may be able to cure your infection by taking several medications aimed at killing the responsible organism, mycobacterium tuberculosis. You may become infected with TB and have no apparent signs or symptoms, until the infection becomes active. There are some common symptoms of active TB infection.

Cough

According to the Mayo Clinic, TB usually attacks your lungs. Symptoms of active infection can include a bad cough that lasts three weeks or longer, coughing up blood, chest pain and pain with breathing or coughing. You are highly contagious through your saliva droplets, which are expelled when you cough. If you suspect that your cough may be caused by TB, seek immediate medical attention. Wear a mask or put something over your mouth to help prevent spread of the disease.

Unexplained Weight Loss

A symptom of TB is unexplained weight loss. You may also notice a lack of appetite. Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of other diseases or illnesses. If you experience a severe cough, as mentioned above, along with loss of appetite and weight loss, contact your health care provider. Your primary care doctor, a pulmonologist or a local health clinic can test you for TB.

Fever and Chills

You may experience fever and chills when infected with TB, reports MedlinePlus. You can treat your fever with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, per your doctor's consent. Keep your body warm and drink hot liquids to help combat chills.

Fatigue and Weakness

Fatigue and weakness may be symptoms of TB. You may seem more tired than usual and find that your daily tasks are often hard to complete.
