It's every new parent's worst nightmare. Your new baby won't go to sleep, and you feel like you and your bed are long-lost relatives. Getting baby to sleep so you can get some shuteye can be a frustrating challenge at times. Babies aren't born with a bedtime routine, and it can take months to establish one. But you can do some things to help encourage your baby to sleep so you can get the rest you need, too.
Stimulation
According to the Mayo Clinic, making sure your baby gets lots of attention and stimulation during the day can lead to better sleep patterns at night. Use lots of light and noise (appropriate for a baby, of course) and action during the day to make sure your baby is adequately entertained and stimulated. Babies' minds are constantly soaking up information, and the more they soak up, the more rest their minds need at bedtime. Babies certainly need naps during the day, but monitor how long they are sleeping during naps, as too long could mean lots of awake time in the middle of the night.
Establish a Routine
Our bodies are naturally wired toward sleep patterns, and babies' bodies are no different. It just takes them a little longer to get adjusted. Establishing a bedtime routine can help your baby recognize and understand when it's time to go to sleep. If you play music for your baby at bedtime, use that same lullaby CD every night.
Have Quiet Time
As part of an established routine, make sure baby gets some quiet time before bed. Stimulation is great, but if baby's mind is going at full speed, it might be tough to get to sleep. Do things like read a book or sing a lullaby, or just have some cuddle time to help your baby wind down and get ready to fall asleep.
Put Baby to Bed Awake
Some parents wait until baby has fallen asleep to put him to bed. According to the Mayo Clinic, this can make it difficult to help baby learn how to go to sleep as part of a bedtime routine. If you notice your baby getting drowsy, start his bedtime routine and put him to bed before he falls asleep. This will help teach what bedtime is and encourage the act of going to bed, rather than just falling asleep.
