High cholesterol levels contribute greatly to clogged arteries in the heart. Clogged arteries increase your risk for heart attack and disease as well as heart failure. Age and diet play a significant role in cholesterol levels and clogged arteries. Most treatments available to clear the arteries include medications and invasive procedures such as angioplasty. Some natural alternatives to these treatments clear the arteries and strengthen arterial walls while lowering cholesterol.
Step 1
Exercise regularly. Sticking to a regular exercise routine two to three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes per session will increase circulation and strengthen the heart while lowering cholesterol and eliminating arterial blockage. Jogging, walking and aerobics are ideal exercises. Attending coronary rehabilitation programs as directed by your doctor also will help you learn tactics to clear your arteries.
Step 2
Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, cod and other cold-water fish. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce LDL cholesterol levels in the blood while helping eliminate excess buildup in the arteries.
Step 3
Increase fiber intake while reducing fat intake. Replacing fatty foods with high-fiber foods such as whole grains, oatmeal and barley will decrease cholesterol levels in the blood and arteries when consumed in conjunction with a low-fat diet.
Step 4
Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. These foods contain antioxidants needed to strengthen arterial walls and remove blockage. Antioxidant-rich foods include citrus fruits, dark leafy greens and vegetables with a yellow or orange color. Onions and garlic are ideal choices for lowering cholesterol as well as soy foods. Avoid excess consumption of red meats and fried foods.
