If you notice a red, itchy rash pop up on your skin, it is not always a cause for concern. An itchy rash may be due to dry skin, heat or an allergic reaction. In addition, an itchy rash may be caused by an internal disease, a reaction to a medication or a parasite, like scabies. Before treating a rash with home remedies, see a doctor to determine the underlying cause of your rash and, if necessary, how to treat it. If your doctor says is it okay, use home remedies to help reduce the itchiness and irritation of your rash.
Step 1
Wear 100 percent cotton clothing. Avoid wearing synthetic materials and wool, which can irritate the rash further and cause you to itch, says the Mayo Clinic.
Step 2
Soak in an oatmeal bath. Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties, says dermatologist Lawrence Charles Parish, M.D. Colloidal oatmeal drains best in a bathtub, but if you do not have colloidal oatmeal, you can grind store-bought dried oats in a coffee grinder, then pour a handful into the bathwater.
Step 3
Shower with unscented, mild soaps formulated for sensitive skin. Harsh soaps and detergents that contain fragrances can irritate skin and make itching worse.
Step 4
Fill a washcloth with ice, then apply it directly to the itchy area as needed throughout the day to prevent itching and reduce the appearance of the rash. If you don't have ice or a washcloth, apply a bag of frozen vegetables to your skin.
Step 5
Stay away from jewelry, cosmetics and cleaning substances that may irritate your skin, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Common irritants may include nickel, perfume and jewelry made of metal alloys.
