1. Layering is the Trick
Dress in layers to prepare for any type of weather. Since you'll face anything from extreme cold to fairly warm, preparation is essential. The perfect layering clothing pieces are easy to remove and easy to put back on. Start with long underwear that is made of polypropylene, a special synthetic fabric that keeps perspiration and dampness away from your body. A natural material such as silk works well, too. Add a bulky middle layer of fleece or wool to insulate your body and keep it warm. Both your top and pants should be insulating pieces. For your outer layer, you want to choose waterproof pants and a waterproof windbreaker. When you are snowshoeing you will be getting plenty of exercise and you may become too warm. Just take off your windbreaker and tie it around your waist. Don't think you don't need your outer jacket, though. If it starts snowing or becomes windy, you'll be glad to have it.
2. Got Cold Feet?
Keep your feet warm and dry. You won't have much fun if you end up with cold, wet feet. Use the same layering principle for your feet as you do for the rest of the body. Buy a pair of thin sock liners to wick away moisture from your skin. Avoid cotton, because it absorbs perspiration and won't keep your feet dry. Next, add thick wool or wool-blend hiking socks. It's a good idea to bring an extra pair of socks with you in case the ones you're wearing get wet. Wear waterproof running shoes or hiking boots. Stay away from really heavy boots, as they will add weight to your snowshoes.
3. Toasty Accessories
Did you realize you lose more body heat through your head than any other part of the body? Keep your head warm and you'll go a long way toward keeping your entire body warm. Always wear a knitted hat that covers your ears. Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens are also necessary. Mittens will keep your hands warmer than gloves because they will trap your entire hand's heat. Moreover, don't forget sunglasses or goggles. Sun shining on white snow is bright and glaring.
4. Stay Smart Instead of Trendy
It may not be the ultimate in style, but a fanny pack will keep all your loose gear together. A water bottle, some dried fruit, sunscreen, medicated lip balm and that extra pair of socks will all be readily available.
