Only a small percentage of hair loss treatments on the market work. Fortunately, consumers have the help of the United States Food and Drug Administration, as well as independent scientists to aid them in coosing a product that may help in their hair regrowth efforts. Although there are just two FDA-approved hair loss treatments, others have shown promise in clinical testing.
Propecia is the most popular hair loss treatment and was the second treatment approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Daily use of Propecia is simple at one pill per day.
Minoxidil was the first hair loss treatment to be approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration and is still a good bet for those dealing with hair loss issues. Daily use of minoxidil involves applying a topical solution to the scalp in the morning and again in the evening.
Nizoral shampoo has plenty of supporters among hair loss experts, as a 1998 study that appeared in Dermatology showed usage was comparable to that of 2 percent minoxidil. Nizoral is available in 1- or 2-percent solutions. Nizoral is used several times per week.
Avodart is another drug that has shown promise in small-scale clinical studies, but has yet to be approved by the FDA. It works similar to Propecia, in that it prevents the formation of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Some trials show that it more effective than Propecia in stopping DHT. Avodart comes in capsule form.
Extreme Hair Therapy is an item available through the Hair Club For Men. It is a five-part hair treatment that contains various cleansers and conditioners, a vitamin supplement and most importantly, minoxidil. The cleansers and conditioner are used once daily, while the capsules and minoxidil are used twice daily.
Provillus is another product that packages a vitamin supplement with minoxidil to promote hair regrowth. The product is available for men and women and the capsules are taken twice daily. The minoxidil is also used two times per day.
Xandrox is another product containing minoxidil, but has several other ingredients, such as Retin-A and Azeleic Acid. Xandrox is made by Dr. Richard Lee's Regrowth Clinic and is also available in higher minoxidil concentrations than can be purchased over the counter, including a 15 percent solution.
Retin-A is another topical solution that is being used to promote hair growth. One of its primary properties is its ability to increase minoxidil absorption, but it also helps to control sebum, which will reduce the amount of DHT on the scalp.
Spironolactone is a topical treatment that is used to prevent DHT from attaching itself to hair follicle receptors. Unlike Propecia, it does not change the amount of DHT produced in the body. It is available in liquid or lotion forms.
Saw palmetto is the most popular of all herbal or natural hair regrowth products. Like Propecia, saw palmetto reduces DHT and is a popular treatment for prostate problems. Saw palmetto extract is preferred over saw palmetto berry capsules.
