An allergy is an inappropriate reaction of the immune system to foreign particles like pollen, dust and certain foods. Symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes and fatigue are characteristic of allergies and can be very difficult to control. Many allergy medications are effective but cause sedation and other side effects, limiting their overall potential. There are a variety of herbal treatments for allergy symptoms, most of which work without causing excessive drowsiness and sedation.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging nettle is a supplement derived from the leaves and stems of the common nettle plant. It is high in quercetin---a compound known for its anti-allergy effects. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, stinging nettle may reduce the itching and sneezing associated with hay fever (allergies). Nettle may be more effective when taken prior to the beginning of allergy season in people with outdoor allergies. Because the root is indicated for treating prostate problems, those looking to treat allergies should choose preparations made from the stems and leaves.

Butterbur

Petasites hybridus---more commonly known as butterbur---is a native European plant prized for its ability to fight allergies and inflammation. It contains compounds that act as leukotriene inhibitors and antihistamines, reducing chemicals in the body that trigger allergic symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, butterbur works as well as the popular allergy medicines fexofenadine and cetirizine without causing drowsiness.
Unfortunately, the long-term safety of butterbur is still under question. Butterbur contains compounds known as pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which have toxic effects on the kidneys and liver. In addition, pyrrolizidine alkaloids may have carcinogenic effects when ingested for long periods of time. To reduce these risks, talk to your doctor before trying butterbur. Choose supplements standardized to contain a certain amount of the active ingredient, and only use brands that are PA-free.

Sida Cordifolia

Sida cordifolia is a plant native to southern states such as Louisiana and Texas. It has been used traditionally in India and other Asian countries as a remedy for fatigue, allergies and other maladies. It contains ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which reduce allergy symptoms by constricting blood vessels in the nose and head, resulting in reduced nasal congestion and sinus pressure. It also has unique anti-inflammatory properties that make it a useful allergy and pain remedy, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Because it contains the stimulant ephedrine, Sida cordifolia should not be taken by people with cardiovascular disease, diabetes or other chronic health conditions. Excessive use may lead to rapid heart beat, increased blood pressure, insomnia and increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
