Some women may experience signs and symptoms of pregnancy prior to missing their menstrual period. Once the sperm and egg combine, the rapidly dividing cluster of cells (zygote) travels down the fallopian tube until it enters the uterus. Once inside the uterus, the fertilized egg begins to implant into the uterine wall. It is at this time (usually during week 3) that pregnancy hormone levels will begin to rise. This is when some women may begin to experience symptoms. Not all women will experience the same signs and symptoms during their pregnancy; however, there are some common early signs of pregnancy.
Tender Breasts
Breast tenderness may be one of the earliest pregnancy symptoms that women experience. It may begin as early as one week before the due date of a woman's period. Many women say the tenderness they feel is an exaggerated version of how their breasts feel before a period, states Baby Center. Women may also experience breast changes. The areola may appear darker in color and blue veins may become apparent on breast tissue.
Heightened Sense of Smell
Many women experience a heightened sense of smell before they miss their period. This is probably due to the increasing levels of estrogen in a pregnant woman's system. Women may experience a gag-like reflex to certain scents, which may lead to nausea or vomiting.
Fatigue
Sudden fatigue is very common in early pregnancy. A woman may suddenly feel exhausted and want to sleep more frequently. Increased levels of the hormone progesterone and the extra effort required to start making a baby can make you feel as if you've run a marathon when all you've done is put in a day at work, reports Baby Center.
Implantation Bleeding and Mild Cramping
According to the Mayo Clinic, sometimes a small amount of spotting or vaginal bleeding prior to missing a period is one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. This occurs as the embryo implants into the uterine wall. The bleeding or spotting is usually shorter in duration and lighter in color than an actual menstrual period. It may be accompanied by mild uterine cramping. Not all women experience implantation bleeding or cramping.
