When considering the best treatment option for your hair loss, consult your doctor to determine the cause of your hair loss and the best treatment options. Natural home remedies give you a way to help decrease hair loss and promote hair re-growth.

Hair Care

In an article in the Good Housekeeping magazine, Les Haverty, artistic director for FHI Heat professional styling tools, you can hide your thinning hair and prevent future hair loss. Using volumizing shampoos and conditioners may help, but make sure they do not contain humectants. These cause your hair to get heavy and decrease your volume. The same is true for heavy moisturizers. Only use styling products designed for thin or fine hair. Apply them starting at the scalp where you want more volume. If you must blow dry, Haverty advises bending over and drying your hair upside down. He also advises getting a haircut with internal layers.

Diet

According to Myhairlossadvisor.com, eating a proper diet is vital to preventing further hair loss and promoting new hair growth. Protein contains the amino acids needed for healthy hair growth. Sources of protein include fish, poultry, dairy products, nuts, eggs and soy. Consume at least 15 percent of your daily calories from protein-rich foods. Carbohydrates contain B vitamins and other nutrients essential to hair growth. Useful carbohydrates can be found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, brown rice and potatoes. Consume 55 to 65 percent of your calories each day from useful carbohydrates. For good health associated with healthy hair growth, the body needs adequate levels of fat. The best sources of fat are plant and animal sources. You should take in 25 to 30 percent of your daily calories from animal and plant fats.

Green Tea

Hair loss often results when your body produces too much dihydrotestostorone (DHT). According to a study published in the "Journal of the National Medical Association" in 2005, green tea has the ability to reduce the amount of DHT produced by the body. Drinking a minimum of three glasses of green tea a day may be the most beneficial.

Saw Palmetto

Similar to green tea, saw palmetto helps to lower levels of DHT produced by the body. According to all4naturalhealth.com, saw palmetto may work much like the drug found in Propecia or Proscar, finasteride. Women on oral contraceptives or hormone therapy should not use this herb as a hair loss remedy.

Scalp Massage

Scalp massage can increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, decrease stress by increasing relaxation and strengthen the hair roots. Increased blood circulation allows more nutrients to reach the hair follicles. Applying oil to the scalp during the message will help nourish the hair follicle and hair strand. The Hair Loss Expert advises the use of almond, sesame, lavender, rosemary, or coconut oils.
