The human body is a complicated machine and, like any machine, requires regular maintenance and cleaning in order to function properly. We are exposed to toxins everyday. Some come from the food we eat, the water we drink, even the air we breathe. Over time, the organs responsible for naturally eliminating these toxins---namely, the liver, kidneys and large intestine---can become toxic as excess waste and chemicals build up. The process of fasting and cleansing helps these organs purge toxins.

Increased Energy

A whole body cleanse typically involves a fasting plan in which only purified water, herbal teas or juices are consumed, or only whole grains, vegetable broths and/or fresh fruits and vegetables. Because calories are limited or severely restricted during a whole body cleanse, a decrease in energy or extreme fatigue can result. An increase of energy, however, is one of the benefits of fasting and cleansing. According to the principles of Ayurvedic medicine, when you clean out your digestive system, especially your colon, you will not only feel lighter, but will also have more energy and may even be able to sleep better. As toxic waste is eliminated from the body, this light feeling and increased energy can last even after the fasting and cleansing period is completed.

Disease Prevention

Physician and natural health guru Dr. Elson Haas states that the process of fasting and cleansing is the "missing link" in modern health and nutrition. He explains that many acute and chronic diseases result from the clogging of tissues and cells, and that many medical problems may be prevented or treated through cleansing and detoxification. By regularly purging the body of unhealthy toxins and waste, you can assist the body's natural defenses and help to prevent disease before it starts.

Combat Aches and Pains

Many people use cleansing and detoxification as a way to combat aches and pains, especially joint pain, such as arthritis, and chronic headaches or migraines. As waste builds up in the digestive tract, toxins are reabsorbed into the blood stream through the intestinal walls. This toxicity leads to headaches, muscle aches and joint pain. Although some modern physicians claim that there is little to no benefit from colon cleansing, others believe that everything is connected to the colon.

Weight Loss

One obvious benefit of fasting and cleansing is weight loss. Much of this weight loss is due to the elimination of excess waste in the digestive tract. Weight loss may also occur from decreased bloating and edema, also known as water-weight loss. The process of fasting and cleansing helps in the development of discipline and self-control when it comes to making food choices.
