It sounds too good to be true. Eat cookies to lose weight? This is what the Hollywood Cookie Diet claims. Cookie diets in general have been around since 1975. Dieters with a sweet tooth may think they are in weight loss heaven, but keep reading to learn all of the details for this weight loss plan.

Method

On the Hollywood Cookie Diet, participants eat four cookies throughout the day and then a healthy dinner at night. No other breakfast or lunch is eaten, just cookies. Co-creators Jamie Kabler and Larry Turner say this diet worked for them, and they offer free diet advice through emails or a phone call. This type of diet is helpful for dieters who do not want to think about their daily meal plans. On the Hollywood Cookie Diet, most of the food for the day is planned out already: cookies. The prepackaged cookies make it easy to take them along and eat consistently throughout a busy day.

Menu

There are four different flavors of cookies on the Hollywood Cookie Diet: chocolate chip, lemon, oatmeal raisin and cranberry orange. The supply for three to four days may cost about $20, as of 2010. The cookies have 150 calories, 4 grams of fiber and 8 grams of sugar each. They are also fortified with vitamins and minerals. To help decide on healthy dinner options, free recipes are available on the diet's website.

Calories

The Hollywood cookie diet is based on calorie restriction. The creators recommend eating a total of 1400 calories per day, from the four cookies--about 600 calories--and a sensible dinner of around 800 calories. According to their estimation, a person who regularly consumes 3,000 calories daily, would lose 15 pounds per month on this diet.

Long Term Effects

The bad news is that this type of diet is not teaching good eating habits to sustain the weight loss. Unless someone wants to eat cookies for the rest of their life, they're going to have to cope with eating on their own at some point. Also with this program there is no focus on exercise to help burn calories and change body composition, a key to long-term weight loss. These cookies may be more expensive than eating other healthy foods instead. Finally cookies cannot substitute the natural antioxidants found in a diet rich in fruits and vegetables with all meals and snacks.

Considerations

None of the Hollywood Cookie Diet's claims have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as their disclaimer notes. Actually, no weight-loss claims have ever been approved for food products by the FDA. Also people with allergies should be aware that the cookies contain wheat, soy, milk and eggs among their ingredients.
