Saunas originated in Finland and have become a part of most gyms and even some homes in the United States. Sauna baths utilize steam to relax and rejuvenate the user while helping eliminate toxins from the body. Using a sauna is an ideal relaxation method after a workout or just for stress relief, however there are some steps to follow before stepping into the steam room for a relaxing sauna bath.
Step 1
Wash your body thoroughly in a shower. Body fragrance, makeup, and bacteria should not be introduced to the humidity of a sauna. Also drink one to two glasses of water to keep hydrated during your sauna bath.
Step 2
Set the sauna temperature to no more than 130 degrees F, with low humidity, when you are a beginner. Experienced sauna users may use higher temps up to 195 degrees F, depending on length of time using the sauna.
Step 3
Step into the sauna completely disrobed. You may wear a towel for comfort when taking a sauna with others. Sit down on the built-in bench and relax. Do not stay in the sauna for more than 20 minutes.
Step 4
Step out of the sauna and take a cold shower to cool off. Rehydration is also important, so drink at least one or two glasses of water after showering. If you feel dizzy at all, do not reenter the sauna.
Step 5
Reenter the sauna and relax once more. After 20 minutes, step out of the sauna.
Step 6
Take another cool shower or go for a swim in the pool. This will cool you off and remove sweat and toxins that have been eliminated through your sweat. Drink one to two more glasses of water and then redress.
