Scars can occur when a non-superficial injury to the skin heals. Deeper injuries may require high amounts of a substance called collagen to create new skin. The additional collagen gives the skin a different color and texture. You may frequently consider facial scarring to be cosmetically unattractive. Your dermatologist will be able to recommend a specific procedure to remove facial scars. Common techniques include laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, dermal fillers and chemical peels.
Step 1
Receive a laser resurfacing procedure from a dermatologist. The dermatologist issues a series of instructions to the laser’s computer, which it uses to control the laser automatically. The energy from the laser vaporizes the upper layers of skin. Dermatologists often perform laser resurfacing to remove facial scarring because facial skin heals relatively quickly.
Step 2
Undergo dermabrasion from a dermatologist. The dermatologist uses an electrical rotary tool to mechanically remove the upper layers of your skin. The skin will appear smoother when it heals from this procedure. Dermabrasion requires a shorter recovery than the laser resurfacing and is commonly used to remove small acne scars.
Step 3
Perform a chemical peel. Apply a chemical peel to your face for the period of time specified by the instructions. The glycolic acid in the chemical peel will break down the old skin cells on the surface of your skin. Chemical peels are best suited for removing superficial scarring, since glycolic acid doesn’t penetrate to the deeper layers of skin.
Step 4
Choose a collagen injection. The dermatologist injects bovine collagen under the skin to fill out deep-pitted acne scars. The effects of collagen injections generally last a maximum of six months, but require very little recovery time.
