Testosterone is an important hormone, particularly in males where it is the dominant sex hormone. Many men experience a decrease in their testosterone levels as they age, which can lead to numerous effects and can also be a risk factor for conditions such as osteoporosis. Testosterone replacement therapy can be used to help men with low testosterone levels get their blood testosterone up to a more appropriate level. This treatment should not be used to increase athletic performance because it can lead to serious side effects.

Step 1

Talk to your regular doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing. Men who have lowered testosterone levels may have trouble concentrating and focusing. They may also experience a decreased sex drive, feelings of worthlessness and problems with erectile dysfunction.

Step 2

Get a referral to an endocrinologist. Endocrinology is the medical specialty that deals with hormonal problems like low testosterone levels. An endocrinologist will be able to measure your testosterone levels and determine an appropriate level of treatment.

Step 3

Have your blood testosterone levels measured. This is done to ensure that the symptoms are due to low testosterone levels and not something else. As the Cleveland Clinic explains, sometimes multiple tests are needed because testosterone levels can fluctuate rapidly during the day.

Step 4

Develop a treatment plan. Testosterone supplementation can be done orally, via injection or using a special skin patch.
