Golf can be a lifelong hobby for many people. However, getting started in golf is often a time of anxiety and frustration as you watch other golfers hit the ball with seeming ease while you are struggling to do anything but top the ball a few yards or shank it off to the right. However, don't worry about it--most golfers start this way. With a few tips, you can start hitting the ball in the air and watch it fly down the middle.

Addressing the Ball

Having the right stance and approach at the tee box won't assure that you will become a good golfer, but having the wrong approach will assure that you won't develop a good swing. Stand with your left shoulder (for a right-handed golfer), facing the green. Make sure your left foot is directly underneath your left shoulder. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart and your knees should be bent in an athletic position.

Hand Position

Place your left hand on the top section of the golf grip. Place the small finger of your right hand in the gap between your forefinger and middle finger of your left hand. Place your thumbs down the shaft of the club. Grip the club at about a six on a scale of one to 10. That's about the equivalent of a firm handshake with a business acquaintance.

The Swing

Begin your swing by turning your hips to the right. As your hips move, bring your hands and arms back. Once your hands have reached shoulder level, rotate your hips to the left. Your hands will again follow and accelerate as they approach the ball. While this is happening, keep your eyes focused on the rear and center portion of the ball. Keep your eyes on that spot through the contact. Continue bringing the club through the ball and don't stop until your club has reached the level of your front shoulder.
