Buspar is the brand name for the generic drug buspirone, and is made by the pharmaceutical company Britstol-Myers Squibb. The Mayo Clinic reports that doctors prescribe Buspar to treat anxiety disorders and the symptoms of anxiety. They note, however, that Buspar is not used "for the anxiety or tension caused by the stress of everyday life." The National Institutes of Health reports that Buspar is occasionally used to treat the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. However, there are possible side effects that may come with taking Buspar.

Common Side Effects

Clinical trials were conducted to determine the side effects caused by Buspar. Bristol-Myers Squibb reports the results of these clinical trials showed Buspar may cause these common side effects, all of which are mild: lightheadedness, dizziness, nervousness, excitement and headache. Other common mild side effects, according to both Bristol-Myers Squibb and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), are: stomach problems, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea; trouble sleeping, excessive tiredness, dry mouth, sore throat, nasal congestion, weakness and numbness.

Infrequent or Rare Side Effects

Bristol-Myers Squibb also reports that there are possible side effects that infrequently or rarely affect those taking Buspar. Buspar infrequently causes changes sexual function, such as increased or decreased sexual desire, and rarely causes problems such as impotence or delayed ejaculation. Infrequently, Buspar causes respiratory problems such as shortness of breath or chest congestion. Other infrequent side effects include: problems with urination, flatulence, decreased or increased appetite, skin problems such as flushing, bruising easily, dry skin and blisters. The NIH advises consulting a medical professional about these side effects if they are bothersome or do not go away.

Allergic Reaction

Some individuals experienced an allergic reaction to Buspar. This means that the body's immune system, which is designed to attack invading germs, inappropriately attacks the medicine. The symptoms associated with an allergic reaction to Buspar include, according to the NIH: rapid or irregular heart beat, rash, itching and disturbed vision. The NIH advises seeking medical attention immediately if experiencing the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
