Hockey is a hard-hitting game that requires players to protect themselves with equipment. In addition to a helmet players wear shoulder pads, shin guards and thigh pads. Many players also wear pads on the their knees and elbows, particularly if they have had injuries there.
Step 1
Put on shoulder pads under your uniform jersey. Shoulder pads protect your upper body when you are checked by an opponent. If you fall to the ice or fly into the boards as a result of the hit or the impact is forceful, the shoulder pads will protect you from injury.
Step 2
Wear shin pads under your uniform socks. In hockey, you will either try to block shots or you will find yourself in the way of errant shots. A puck is made of vulcanized rubber and the shin guards protect the legs from damage caused by a puck that can be shot at speed approaching 100 miles per hour.
Step 3
Put on thigh pads under your uniform pants. This area is also vulnerable if you get hit by the puck and take a hard fall. These pad are often slipped inside the uniform pants.
Step 4
Secure knee pads and elbow pads to those vulnerable areas. Knee pads are almost always worn by players who have had knee injuries and the same holds for players who have had elbow injuries. In addition, they are worn to prevent injuries by some players. A number of players find knee and elbow pads somewhat bulky and uncomfortable.
