The acai berry, which comes from the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, has become a popular ingredient in many nutritional supplements. It has many health benefits because it is rich in antioxidants, omega fats, protein, fiber and amino acids. Acai also has another interesting benefit that goes beyond individual health. The profit made from the berries goes back into this area of Brazil, where it has become instrumental in helping to save the rainforest in the Amazon.
Antioxidants
Acai berry is rich in anthrocyanins, which is an antioxidant source. This offers similar phytochemicals to the ones in red wine. Antioxidants have been shown to have anti-aging properties and to be beneficial to the heart. Anthrocyanins have specifically shown health benefits in the treatment of some diseases, including fibrocystic breast disease and diabetic retinopathy. Acai berry may also be helpful in reducing cholesterol and saturated fat levels in the body, which is necessary for heart health.
Omega Fats
Healthy fats--including those found in acai--lower the instance of heart disease by regulating levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. They also aid in the digestion and absorption of vitamins A, E, D and K and help to keep the digestive tract operating properly. Acai is loaded with healthy unsaturated fats. Its levels are similar to those of healthy olive oil. The pulp of acai contains omega fatty acids oleic and linoleic, also known as omega 9 and omega 6.
Fiber
Acai is a fruit, so it's not unusual that it contains healthy fiber, but this berry has a large amount. Every 100 grams of dried acai--a typical serving--has almost 14 grams of fiber. Fiber aids in digestion and can be helpful in avoiding certain diseases, including colon cancer. The high fiber content of acai has made it a logical choice in cleansing products because it is more likely to promote bowel movements than lower fiber fruits.
Protein and Amino Acids
Acai can supply the body with protein and amino acids, two nutrients essential to good health. Protein is the fuel that keeps the body functioning properly. Acai contains vegetable protein, which does not have saturated fat like animal protein. It may not satisfy daily protein needs , but it is a source of low-calorie, healthy fat protein. Acai also supplies amino acids, which are important to muscle strength and growth. Nearly 20 different amino acids have been identified in acai.
