6 Ways to Avoid Iron-Depleting Foods

1. To Drink or Not to Drink

While they may make your list of daily essentials, coffee and tea contain tannins which block the absorption of iron. While you should limit coffee and tea as much as possible if you have concerns about iron deficiency, you don't have to say goodbye to them entirely. Try to enjoy your cup of java at least one hour before or after meals or supplementation with iron pills to help increase iron absorption.

2. Get Your Egg Yolks, Folks

There is more than one reason to take the yolk out of the egg. If you are trying to avoid iron-depleting foods, egg yolks certainly make the list, and they are also full of bad cholesterol. 3. Milk Does a Body Good, In Moderation

Dairy products are a controversial subject when it comes to foods that block iron absorption. It seems that some calcium actually helps to increase iron absorption, while too much can deplete iron. Also, if you take calcium supplements, do not take iron supplements at the same time. Instead, leave at least a few hours between supplements for best results.

4. Fiber Facts

Fiber is one of the most important aspects of healthy nutrition as it helps to promote heart health as well as digestion and elimination; however, it also makes the list of foods that limit iron absorption. 5. Acid Aggravation

Unfortunately, the symptoms of iron deficiency include peptic ulcers, meaning you may be tempted to treat your heartburn and upset stomach with antacids. Antacids lower the levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach which reduces the bodies ability to absorb iron. Instead of antacid, dry natural remedies for heart burn such as eating bananas, which also happen to contain iron, chewing food slowly and splitting your meals into five small meals instead of three larger meals.
