According to the National Institutes of Health, the most common type of headache is a tension headache. Though the severity of the pain varies greatly from person to person, it usually manifests as a dull, aching discomfort within the head that lasts from 30 minutes to a week. For most people, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are the standard form of treatment. However, there are far more natural ways to alleviate headaches.
Well-balanced Diet
One of the most natural ways to alleviate headaches is through diet. The Cleveland Clinic claims that eating well-balanced meals at regular intervals throughout the day can help prevent headaches. This means plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, lean meats and low-fat dairy for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. In addition, the clinic urges people to never skip meals. This may bring on a headache.
Exercise
The Cleveland Clinic also recommends regular exercise to help alleviate headaches. People should aim for 20 minutes of moderately intense activities at least three days a week. Exercise reduces stress and triggers the release of endorphins into the bloodstream. Both can reduce the intensity and frequency of headaches.
Stress Management
Stress is known to trigger headaches--especially ongoing stress, the Mayo Clinic says. With stress management, it can be something as simple as taking small breaks during the day to actively relax or something as involved as relaxation classes to learn techniques to better handle emotions and stress.
Reducing Caffeine
The Cleveland Clinic recommends reducing caffeine intake to naturally ease headaches. Though caffeine is found in many pain relievers--it helps with the absorption of analgesics--too much caffeine can have an adverse effect on pain.
Avoid Alcohol
According to the Cleveland Clinic, alcohol increases blood flow to the brain. This can intensify the severity and frequency of head pain.
Get Plenty of Sleep
The National Institutes of Health says that when a person gets at least eight hours of sleep each night, he's less likely to develop a headache.
Stretching
For people who spend the majority of their day in a seated position, the Cleveland Clinic suggests stretching periodically throughout the day. This can relieve tension within the muscles than may contribute to the formation of a headache. Stretch the arms, shoulders, legs, back and neck.
