During menopause, most women experience mood fluctuations, sleep disturbances, hot flashes and sexual problems. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), many peri-menopausal and menopausal women turn to medicinal herbs and other natural remedies for relief from these unpleasant symptoms. While no treatment option can prevent or slow menopause, NCCAM notes that several botanical medicines may help mitigate some of the problems associated with the transition.

Soy

Soy contains isoflavones, plant-based compounds similar in structure to estrogen. In theory, these compounds can "trick" hormone receptors in the body, leading to fewer hot flashes and night sweats. In a comprehensive 2005 review, NCCAM determined that soy isoflavone supplements are generally safe for short-term use. However, NCCAM also notes that studies regarding soy's efficacy have been contradictory. Soy isoflavones may benefit some menopausal women but not others.

Red Clover

Another source of isoflavones, red clover may also help to reduce some of the discomforts associated with menopause. Many natural products include red clover combined with other hormone-affecting herbs, such as soy and black cohosh. According to NCCAM, no clinical trials have conclusively demonstrated that red clover is beneficial during menopause. However, because it has very few side effects, red clover remains one of the most commonly recommended herbal remedies for menopausal and peri-menopausal women.

Black Cohosh

By far the most popular herbal remedy for menopause, black cohosh has been used for centuries to support women's health. According to NCCAM, recent studies have questioned black cohosh's efficacy as a treatment for hot flashes and night sweats. Unlike phytoestrogen herbs, black cohosh acts directly on the uterus rather than the endocrine system. Black cohosh may help to relieve amenorrhea and vaginal dryness during menopause; however, more studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness.

Ginseng

A component of traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng acts as a powerful adaptogen--it enables the body to adapt to stress with fewer adverse effects. Upon reviewing clinical data, NCCAM determined that ginseng may help to relieve mood swings and sleep disturbances during peri-menopause and menopause. Additionally, Medline Plus (a service of the U.S. National Institutes of Health) states that ginseng may improve sexual response and energy levels. Similar adaptogen herbs include rhodiola, ashwagandha and eleuthero.
