Recovery breathing is a technique used by people to recover from a stressful moment or episode, or to recuperate from shortness of breath. Those who regularly practice yoga may incorporate recovery breathing into their yoga routine. Recovery breathing is a conscious breathing effort to restore balance to the body and mind.

Step 1

Lie down on your back in a comfortable position (you may use pillows or a yoga mat) if you're at home or in an appropriate setting. If you are in public and can't lie down, you can still do recovery breathing. Try sitting upright with your spinal cord straight and your shoulders back.

Step 2

Inhale deeply, through the nose, filling up your lungs completely. Mentally picture the oxygen entering your body, filling up your lungs and traveling through your bloodstream to give oxygen to all of your organs and cells. Think about the renewed energy your body is getting from the fresh air.

Step 3

Exhale slowly, though the mouth. Allow your body and limbs to relax and rest as you exhale. Concentrate on this relaxation by mentally picturing your body melting into the floor.

Step 4

Repeat this as necessary until you're calm and relaxed. Practice this technique every night so you can reach a relaxed state more quickly when you need it.

Things You'll Need
