Red clover is a low-growing perennial herb with three-lobed leaves and many small, reddish pink flower clusters. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries as an herbal remedy. Recently, red clover has been given increased attention from the medical community, due to the discovery that the plant contains a number of active chemical constituents. These may show promise as treatment for a certain cancers and as an aid to women in menopause.

Traditional Treatments

Traditionally, red clover has been used for a variety of upper respiratory problems, including bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma. It's also recommended by modern herbalists as a digestive aid, and as a topical treatment for eczema and psoriasis.

Cancer Treatment and Prevention

Several of the isoflavones in red clover are known to have anti-tumor properties. These include genistein and daidezein. In fact, in a monograph published by Dr. Jonathan Hartwell, it was indicated that over 30 different cultures around the world use red clover to treat cancer. Red clover also contains tocopherol, also known as vitamin E, which has significant antioxidant affects in the body. This helps reduce the effects of free radicals, which can damage cells and trigger cancer growth. Patients with cancers that are sensitive to hormones should avoid red clover, due to the similarity of its isoflavones to estrogen.

Easing Menopause

Because the isoflavones in red clover have an effect similar to estrogen on the body, they can significantly ease the uncomfortable affects of menopause--particularly hot flashes. The isoflavones in red clover may also help prevent bone loss due to osteoporosis. Because of the estrogenic effects of red clover, post-menopausal women taking an estrogen replacement should consult s doctor before using red clover as a supplement.
