There are two basic methods of treating hair loss: the oral route, which involves taking tablets, and the topical route, which consists of applying a treatment to the scalp. While the topical route generally will produce fewer side effects, the method that has shown to be the most effective is the oral route.

Finasteride

Finasteride is sold under the name Propecia for hair loss purposes and has been clinically proven to be the single-most effective hair loss treatment available. Propecia is a 1mg finasteride tablet and works by preventing the conversion of testosterone into the androgen dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone, or simply DHT, attaches itself to hair follicles and will shrink them, leading to the loss of hair. The most common side effects of erectile dysfunction and a decreased libido occur in less than 2 percent of men taking Propecia. Propecia is not intended to be taken by women.

Saw Palmetto Extract

Saw palmetto extract is the most widely used natural treatment for hair loss. While clinical studies on the effectiveness of saw palmetto extract have been minimal, the basis of its effectiveness resides in that acts similar to finiasteride by blocking the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. The study widely cited to promote saw palmetto extract as a hair loss treatment appeared in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2002. Only 19 study participants were used, making the results a bit of a question mark. The most common daily dosage for hair loss is 320mg of saw palmetto extract. If saw palmetto berry capsules are taken 1,500mg to 2,000mg would need to be taken. Reported side effects include allergic reactions, upset stomach and headaches. Women of childbearing age should check with their doctor before taking saw palmetto.

Nettle Root

Nettle root is another popular tablet among those using natural treatments for hair loss. Much like saw palmetto extract, nettle root is believed to be effective due to its ability to block the formation of DHT, although there is little in the way of clinical studies to promote nettle root as a proven hair loss treatment. A dosage of 500mg per day is usually suggested when using nettle root as a hair loss treatment. Reported side effects include digestion problems and difficulty urinating. Those with heart or kidney problems should check with their physician before taking nettle root.
