A lack of energy in young women is often referred to as fatigue. Young women experience fatigue for myriad health and emotional reasons. Their lives are complicated, with issues relating to finding independent lives, getting an education, starting a career, as well as issues related to goals for life. Fatigue may be sporadic or ongoing; it may deeply impact the quality of life of a young woman.

Anemia

Unusually heavy bleeding, sometimes with noticeable blood clots, may be a sign of dysfunctional uterine bleeding, according to the Florida Health Finder. This disorder causes an excess loss of blood that is linked to fatigue and anemia in young women. Anemia may also be caused by poor nutrition, with inadequate iron intake. This will also cause fatigue in young women.

Anorexia

The lack of food intake that occurs with anorexia may lead to profound fatigue in young women. Eating very little in an attempt to lose weight may negatively impact the ability of the body to create and use energy.

Diuretics

A young woman may use over-the-counter or illicitly gained prescription diuretics to try to lose water weight from her body in an attempt to lose weight. Diuretics sap potassium from the body, which can cause fatigue in a young woman.

Depression

Fatigue that is consistent throughout the day may be a symptom of depression, according to the National Institutes of Health. Depression may arise in young women for many reasons such as life events, stress, relationship issues and family issues or a death in the family.

Thyroid Gland Problems

An underactive or overactive thyroid gland may cause problems with fatigue in young women. If a female patient complains of fatigue and there is no cause apparent, a physician may order a thyroid test.

Lack of Sleep

Young women sometimes have a frenetic schedule. They take on many activities including work, school, hobbies, sports, spending time with friends and Internet socializing. Sometimes young women scrimp on sleep to get more time for other activities. Eventually a lack of sleep may lead to profound fatigue.

Stress

Stress sometimes causes trouble sleeping for young women. They lose quality sleep when they focus too much on worries about grades, work, friends, romance, their future and their family. Young women may not yet have learned how to use stress-relief techniques such as exercise, yoga or meditation to quell stress to allow them to sleep well at night.
