Fibromyalgia is a painful condition which affects about 2 percent of Americans, according to the Mayo Clinic. The main symptoms of this often misunderstood condition include muscle pain, weakness and fatigue. Though there is no cure, people with fibromyalgia are often given painkillers and other prescription medications to deal with the symptoms. Alternative treatments are also available to help people with fibromyalgia, but many different aspects of these treatments have to be considered before they are implemented.

Step 1

Learn about what type of medicine and philosophy the treatment comes from. For example, acupuncture, chiropractic care and massage therapy are three very popular alternative treatments for fibromyalgia. The Mayo Clinic states that acupuncture, which involves placing small needles into the skin, comes from Chinese medicine, and is based on the philosophy that the needles will stimulate blood flows to certain areas. Chiropractic care originated from Western medicine, and is based on the theory that adjusting the spine can improve movement and decrease fibromyalgia pain. Massage therapy aims to improve circulation, promote relaxation and force toxins out of the body.

Step 2

Find clinical trials and research proving the benefits of the alternative treatment. The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine states that there is not enough evidence to support the effectiveness of massage therapy or chiropractic care for fibromyalgia, though some studies show that acupuncture can effectively reduce fibromyalgia pain (see Resources).

Step 3

Talk to your doctor about possible side effects and interactions associated with alternative treatments for fibromyalgia. Only your doctor will know if any alternative treatments will interact with any medications you're taking. The National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine recommends finding out which alternative treatments are covered by your health insurance.

Step 4

Compare the benefits and drawbacks of alternative treatments for fibromyalgia with those of conventional medications. Though alternative treatments like yoga and massage therapy may not be proven to be as effective as medications, they are also generally safer. Some of the prescription medications used to treat fibromyalgia may effectively reduce pain, but may also lead to constipation, dizziness and other side effects.
