The Master Cleanse diet, also known as the lemonade diet or the lemon cleanse diet, involves consuming lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It is a detoxification program created by Stanley Burroughs in the 1950s. The Master Cleanse is marketed as a weight loss and detoxification program, but Burroughs was not a doctor and was convicted for practicing medicine without a license when a patient died under his care, says "Fitness" magazine. If you must try the Master Cleanse, follow it only under a doctor's supervision and at your own risk.
Step 1
Ease into the diet with a three-day regimen. The first day, eat only fresh fruits and vegetables. The second day, eat only vegetable broth, and fresh-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices. The third day, drink only fresh-squeezed orange juice and water.
Step 2
Prepare the lemonade mixture. Mix 2 tbsp. maple syrup, 2 tbsp. fresh-squeezed lemon juice, 1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper and 8 oz. of filtered water or spring water in a glass.
Step 3
Drink the lemonade mixture as much as desired throughout the day to curb hunger and keep your energy up. Otherwise, drink only water.
Step 4
Continue to drink only the lemonade mixture for as long as you feel comfortable. "Some only use the lemonade diet for four to five days, while others take it out to two weeks," says "Every Diet."
Step 5
Ease back into eating your regular diet by reversing the first three days of the diet. The first day, drink only fresh-squeezed orange juice. The second day, eat only vegetable juices and vegetable broths. The third day, eat only fresh fruits and vegetables.
