Using a pitching mound can help pitchers develop proper speed and accuracy as they develop and hone their skills. You can build a pitcher's mount in your backyard and soon you'll be striking out opponents in league games.
Step 1
Mix dirt, sand, and clay, divided into equal parts. This will create the materials needed to build the pitcher's mound.
Step 2
Draw a circle on the spot that you'd like the mound to be. The mound should be a circle 18 feet in diameter. While standard regulations state that the mound must be 10 1/2 inches higher than home plate, some leagues have other rules regarding the appropriate mound height.
Step 3
Pile enough dirt onto the spot to meet the diameter and height requirements. Pack the dirt tightly, flattening the top of the mound. There should be a flat circle 5 feet in diameter on the top of the mound. Continue packing the dirt, allowing it to slope downward evenly from the top of the pitcher's mound to the ground.
Step 4
Place a rubber slab on the pitching mound. This is a white piece of rubber measuring 24 inches long by 6 inches wide where the pitcher traditionally throws from. It should be placed in the middle of the mound, slightly toward the back. Place the rubber 10 feet from the front of the mound and 8 feet from the back of the mound.
