Constipation is usually caused by one or a combination of several factors, including a highly processed diet, dehydration and lack of exercise. Constipation becomes more common as people age and the digestive system slows, but it can strike at any age. Constipation is generally described as going three or more days without a bowel movement. In general, it's a good idea to get 25g of fiber each day and to drink plenty of water. If left untreated, constipation can lead to a painful bowel impaction. Luckily, relief may be as close as your own refrigerator.

Prunes

An oldie but still a goodie, prunes provide fiber to get your colon moving as well as dihydrophenylisatin, which has a laxative effect. Try eating three or four prunes to get relief. Prune juice contains the laxative, but not the fiber. Plums may be substituted for the prunes.

Mineral Oil

Familydoctor.org suggests mineral oil as a quick home remedy for constipation following a surgery or when straining for a bowel movement is contraindicated. The oil can cause stomach cramps and diarrhea and should be used only when advised by a physician.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The pectin in apple cider vinegar is water soluble fiber than can help get your bowels moving again. Drink 2 tbsp. of the vinegar mixed into an 8-oz. glass of water or juice to get the full benefit. Repeat if constipation is not relieved in a few hours.
