Wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, the Mayo Clinic explains. As you age, the skin naturally loses collagen and becomes thinner and less elastic. The skin has fewer ways to protect itself from damage. The accumulation of a lifetime of exposure to free radicals and ultraviolet rays, as well as facial expressions begin to show. There are steps you can take through the years to prevent premature aging and wrinkles on your forehead.
Step 1
Wear sunscreen and a hat whenever you're in the sun, even in the winter. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic report that sun exposure is the number one cause of facial wrinkles. Limit the time you spend in direct sunlight.
Step 2
Keep your skin moisturized. Moist skin cells can plump up easier than dry skin cells. Look for moisturizers that contain sunscreen to get double-duty from your creams and lotions. Use moisturizers that contain retinol, which is an antioxidant that can destroy free radicals that damage the skin cells, leading to wrinkles.
Step 3
Relax your face. Remain conscious of the expressions you make everyday. Frowning or raising your eyebrows creates a crease that eventually becomes permanent, reports dermatologist Gene Rubinstein.
Step 4
Exercise, meditate or practice yoga to keep stress levels low in your life. Stress causes certain hormones, such as cortisol, to be released, which affects the health of the skin and can lead to permanent wrinkles and premature aging on the face.
Step 5
Work to strengthen your forehead muscles with a simple exercise. Place your pointer fingers on your eyebrows, and try to hold your fingers still while you raise your eyebrows. Hold for a second, and lower your eyebrows. The resistance helps to develop your forehead muscles and keep them suppler. Repeat the move 10 times, once a day.
Step 6
Massage your face lightly after the eyebrow exercise. Go in a circular motion across your cheekbones, beside your eyes and over your forehead.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink eight, 8 oz. glasses of water everyday to keep your body hydrated. Skin is comprised mostly of water, and an inadequate supply causes your skin to dry up faster, making it more prone to wrinkling.
- Don't smoke. Smoking impedes circulation to the face, making it more difficult for your forehead to receive the proper amount of blood to stay firm and healthy.
