Razor bumps--inflamed areas created when recently shaved hair curls and grows back into the skin, at which point your body identifies and attacks it as an intruder--can be anywhere from uncomfortable to downright embarrassing, and may leave you vulnerable to developing an infection in the affected area. While razor bumps are best prevented by using proper shaving techniques, there are also few things you can do to treat the bumps once they emerge.
Step 1
Dampen the affected skin. Lave the are gently with a damp washcloth, using a circular washing motion, for two or three minutes before going to bed.
Step 2
Insert a sterile needle beneath any ingrown hair loops that show above the skin. Use the needle to gently lift the tip of the hair out of your skin.
Step 3
Splash an astringent liquid like witch hazel onto the razor bumps, or apply carefully with a cotton swab soaked in the astringent.
Step 4
Apply an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory cream such as hydrocortisone to the affected area at least once daily.
Step 5
Apply a shaving lotion or acne cream containing benzoyl peroxide to the affected area to help take the swelling down and prevent a recurrence.
