Coreg CR, or carvedilol, is a prescription medication classified as a beta-blocker. It is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure, and exerts its action by blocking beta receptors found on the heart. Normally, certain chemicals bind to the beta receptors and the heart pumps faster and harder. By preventing this, the heart rate slows down and the heart does not have to pump as hard. Like all medications, Coreg CR produces many common side effects. Discuss any concerns with a health care provider.
Hypotension
Hypotension, or low blood pressure, may occur with the administration of Coreg CR. Up to 20 percent of users may experience hypotension. Be careful when moving from a sitting or lying position to a standing position. Use caution when climbing stairs, as well. If you experience shortness of breath or chest pain, stop the medication and seek medical help right away.
Dizziness
Coreg CR can cause dizziness in about 17 percent of people, states the "Drug Information Handbook." Dizziness may impair your ability to drive a car or concentrate. Use caution when driving or performing activities that require alertness. Your body will slowly get accustomed to the medication and the side effect will decrease. Inform your doctor if the dizziness becomes severe. About 14 percent of individuals may experience fatigue. This adverse effect will also decrease over time.
Hyperglycemia
Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is a side effect that may be seen in up to 12 percent of individuals on Coreg CR. This effect may be dangerous in people who have diabetes. Furthermore, the beta-blockers mask or hide the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar level, or hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia may lead to diabetic coma and eventual death if left untreated. For this reason, Coreg CR should be avoided in diabetics. Always inform your physician of all your medical conditions and the medications you take to ensure you are receiving the appropriate drug therapy.
Diarrhea
Diarrhea is a common side effect produced by Coreg CR. According the "Drug Information Handbook," up to 12 percent of individuals may face this side effect. Try eating small meals throughout the day and avoiding large fatty meals. Also, drink enough fluids to stay hydrated. If the diarrhea is persistent for more than three days or you have bloody stools, discontinue the medication and contact your physician for further instructions.
Other Effects
Muscle and bone weakness may occur in up to 11 percent of users of Coreg CR. Weight gain may also occur and is seen in 10 to 12 percent of people. About 6 percent of people will experience headache. If any of these undesired side effects become bothersome and persistent, contact your doctor and discuss any issues you may have.
