Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication your doctor may prescribe to block the production of cholesterol in your body. Simvastatin reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol in the blood, according to Drugs.com. Controlling your cholesterol is important, because it decreases your risk for heart disease, hardening of the arteries, stroke and vascular disease. As with all medications, you should be aware of the possible side effects and what to do if you experience them.

Musculoskeletal System Side Effects

The most common and serious side effects of simvastatin are those that affect your musculoskeletal system. According to Drugs.com, simvastatin may cause muscle pain, tenderness or weakness. In addition, these symptoms may be accompanied by fever or flu symptoms and dark-colored urine. You should immediately call your doctor if you are experiencing these side effects. Stop taking simvastatin and apply ice or heat to the areas that are giving you the most discomfort. Ask your doctor if you should take an over-the-counter medication to relieve your discomfort.

Digestive Tract Side Effects

Drugs.com states that simvastatin may cause unwanted side effects on your gastrointestinal system. These include mild stomach pain, gas, bloating, stomach upset, heartburn, nausea, constipation or diarrhea. These side effects are not serious and may be treated with over-the-counter medications. The side effects will likely improve over time as your body adjusts to simvastatin. However, you should let your doctor know that you are experiencing these side effects.

Nervous System Side Effects

Simvastatin can also cause unwanted side effects on your nervous system. The Mayo Clinic lists difficulty in moving, headaches and unusual tiredness or weakness as possible, but uncommon side effects. These side effects will likely improve once your body adjusts to simvastatin. Be sure to continue a regular exercise program to prevent or reduce the intensity of these side effects. See you doctor immediately if you experience blindness or blurry vision, which are rare side effects associated with this medication.
