Chromium picolinate is a supplement used to regulate blood sugar levels and to lose weight. It's made of chromium, a mineral needed for the metabolism of glucose and in the synthesis of cholesterol, proteins and fats.
According to the fourth edition of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis Balch, a chromium deficiency can cause anxiety, fatigue and glucose intolerance.
Too much chromium can lead to toxicity, which can harm the liver and gastrointestinal tract.

Benefits

Chromium picolinate can be absorbed easily into the body. It can help control blood cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It may also help people lose fat.
Other possible benefits include suppressing appetite and controlling food cravings, which could inevitably help people lose weight.

Considerations

Chromium picolinate is sold as a dietary or herbal supplement and is therefore not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Some supplements are contaminated with other substances or contain harmful levels of ingredients. If you're going to buy chromium picolinate, make sure it's from a reputable source.

Warning

People with insulin-dependent diabetes should check with their doctors before taking chromium picolinate. The supplements can improve insulin function and reduce the need for insulin. Insulin levels need to be monitored closely.
Chromium picolinate isn't recommended for children unless recommended by their pediatrician.

Theories/Speculation

In a book called "Personal Nutrition," Marie Boyle and Sara Long say chromium picolinate is "falsely promoted to increase muscle mass, decrease body fat, enhance energy and promote weight loss."
There is speculation that chromium picolinate may cause cancer because it causes gene mutations and an interruption in DNA. Other studies contradict these findings. As always, check with your health care provider with any concerns.
In the fourth edition of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," Phyllis Balch says the average U.S. diet is "chromium deficient." The reasons given include the inability to absorb chromium from food, a lack of foods being eaten that contain chromium, and a diet high in sugar that causes the body to lose chromium.

Side Effects

Some people complain of light-headedness or a skin rash while taking chromium picolinate. If this happens, stop taking it and consult a physician.

Chromium is a mineral found in foods such as beef, brown rice, cheese, turkey, chicken, eggs, mushrooms and potatoes. The body needs small amounts of chromium to function properly, and a deficiency isn't common.
