While you don't have any control over genetics, you are in charge of many of the lifestyle choices that can have a huge impact on your health and longevity. Your day-to-day decisions can increase or decrease your risk of obesity, cancer, heart disease, stroke and other medical conditions.

Preventative Care

It's important to get regular health screenings even when you feel well, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Preventative care includes checking your cholesterol and blood pressure levels along with your weight. Women over age 50 should undergo a mammogram every two years to test for breast cancer. Men and women older than 50 should be screened for colorectal cancer.

Eat Healthy Foods

The food you put into your body can have a major impact on your health. The Mayo Clinic says a healthy diet includes foods from the major food groups. These are lean sources of protein, seeds, nuts, low fat-dairy items, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Exercise Often

Regular physical activity is a key component of a quality health strategy. Getting at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity, like brisk walking, at least 5 days per week can improve your heart health and lower your risk of certain cancers. Exercise can also improve your mood and energy level and help you maintain a normal weight, which is vital to healthy living.

Minimize Stress

Undue stress can be an energy zapper and potentially dangerous to your health. Stress management techniques are important to healthy living. Identify what is causing you to feel stressed. Maybe the death and destruction reported on the evening news is triggering a stress response. In this case you can turn off the TV. Consider exploring methods of relaxation such as yoga or meditation to help you calm down and relieve stress.

Miscellaneous Precautions

If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. The Mayo Clinic defines moderate drinking as two drinks a day if you're a man, or one drink a day if you're a woman. If you smoke, try to quit. Avoid overexposure to the sun and wear a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher before going outdoors. Remember to wear your seatbelt when riding in a motor vehicle.
