Cracked feet are often caused by skin dryness. The heels on the feet contain fissures surrounded by rough and calloused skin. Other symptoms associated with cracked feet are pain while walking, discolored skin, and itchiness.
Cracked heels are associated with certain medical disorders, like thyroid disease and diabetes. Speak to your doctor if you are concerned about the condition. Treating the underlying problem may relieve the symptoms associated with cracked feet.

Step 1

Wear good shoes. Shoes that do not fit properly can cause you to develop cracks on the feet. Avoid shoes that have an open back or thin soles, according to the ePodiatry website. The soles of your shoes should be shock absorbent.

Step 2

Wash the feet in lukewarm water. Soaking in hot water can strip the feet of moisture and lead to cracks developing. Try to keep showers and baths to less than 10 minutes. Dry your feet thoroughly after bathing, making sure you get between the toes.

Step 3

Exfoliate the feet to remove the rough patches of skin surrounding the fissures. Massage the area with a pumice stone to smooth out the area at least once a week.

Step 4

Massage the heels of your feet with a moisturizing cream. Apply the cream after bathing. You can use petroleum jelly or mineral oil to moisturize the feet and relieve the discomfort associated with the condition. You can slather the feet with lotion and then lock the moisture in with socks prior to bed each evening.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have diabetes, your doctor is likely to check your feet regularly to check for cracks and other signs of damage. Treat the condition immediately to reduce your risk of complications.
  • Never try to remove the rough skin around the cracked areas with a razor blade. You can injure yourself and increase your risk of developing an infection.
