There are many medications that have the potential of causing depression as a side effect. These even include antidepressants, medicines designed to ease and control depression. While all drugs have the potential to cause side effects, not everyone who takes a drug will get side effects, even those classified as common. However, when you do get a side effect that causes depression, it is important to get medical aid in most cases.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines in most cases are prescribed to help you deal with anxiety and its associated disorders. Commonly called "benzos," these medications are sold under such brand names in the United States as Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, Librium and Ativan. The Mayo Clinic reports that these medications also may be used in the treatment of depression-related anxiety. In the case of benzodiazepines, depression symptoms such as discouragement, empty or sad feelings and a decrease in your interests or in pleasure are common serious side effects.
Anti-Seizure Drugs
Drugs that are prescribed in the treatment of seizures, such as those associated with epilepsy, also may cause depression and its related symptoms as side effects. For example, both Neurontin and Rivotril are anti-seizure medications. Both can induce depression as a side effect. Neurontin, for example, can produce depression side effects mainly in children who take the medicine. This is a common serious side effect.
Antidepressants
In most cases, people who take antidepressants get relief from their depressive symptoms. However, some of these drugs are known to increase the symptoms in some people. For example, Tofranil, Drugs.com states, can worsen your depression, and you should seek emergency medical help if it does.
Hormonal Medications
Hormone replacement therapy can be used to lessen the effects of menopause, to help spur growth in children and to help reduce problems such as prostate troubles. Some of these types of drugs can induce depression, too. For example, Saizen, a growth hormone, may cause depression symptoms in some patients who take it, RxList.com states. Activella, a medication used to replace estrogen that your body may not longer make enough of after menopause, can cause depression, but only as a non-serious and temporary side effect that should disappear after a few days of use of the medicine.
