There are few things in life that are as painful as the betrayal of infidelity. The breach of trust that an extramarital affair represents can be very difficult to overcome. As hard as it is to learn the truth, though, it can be even more agonizing to suspect infidelity but not be sure. The uncertainty keeps you trapped in your circumstances and your confusing emotions. Although it is impossible to predict for certain if your spouse is being unfaithful to you without confronting him, there are certain signs common to people involved in affairs. Knowing the signs of infidelity can help you deal with the issue head-on.

Emotionally Unavailable

If your spouse suddenly withdraws or seems cold, it could be an indication he's having an affair. An unfaithful spouse will try to avoid his partner, focusing mostly on his needs and desires. He will treat his spouse and his children with disinterest. He will resist your efforts to involve him in family activities. He may even outright ignore you. If you try to get him to open up to you, he might accuse you of prying into his private business. He is emotionally separating himself from your marriage.

Anger and Criticism

A spouse who is involved in an affair might be unduly angry much of the time and overly critical. She will begin to find fault with everything about you and provoke arguments over trivial things. Her verbal attacks may even take the form of emotional abuse, with name-calling, insults and demeaning comments. According to HowToCatchACheater.net, your partner is trying to exaggerate your faults in order to justify her affair. Blaming you is easier than coping with guilt or shame for her behavior.

Privacy

Because affairs are conducted in secret, a spouse who is cheating will become very vigilant about his privacy. He may open a separate e-mail or bank account and refuse to give you access to it. He will clear the history on his web browser and delete messages before you can see them. He might also try to hide credit card and phone statements from you. When questioned about his activities, it is not uncommon for an unfaithful spouse to become overly defensive with you. He might accuse you of smothering him and demand that you mind your own business.

Appearance

A sudden interest in her appearance could be an indication that your spouse is having an affair. She might begin to schedule herself for hair and nail appointments or buy herself new clothes. She might also begin losing weight or working out at the gym a lot. Wanting to look good doesn't necessarily mean your wife is having an affair in and of itself, but taken in context with other behaviors, it could be an indication that she is being unfaithful.

Increased Time Away From Home

To spend time with his new girlfriend, your spouse will begin to invent reasons to be away from home. The common excuses include out-of-town business trips, longer hours at work and hanging out with his buddies. As plausible as his explanations may sound, if the amount of time is excessive, it could be a sign of an extramarital affair.
